Ephesians 6:10–18 · World English Bible

The Armor
of God

“Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.” — 6:10

Stand
therefore.

This is not a call to panic, posture, or human bravado. The strength is the Lord’s; the armor is God’s. The command is to receive what he provides—and stand.

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” 6:11

Know the battle · 6:12

See the true struggle

“For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

People are not the enemy. Paul lifts our eyes beyond resentment and retaliation. Spiritual clarity makes room to resist evil without turning our neighbors into targets.

I
The belt · 6:14

Truth

“Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist…”

Truth gathers everything together. God’s character, Christ’s promises, and honest speech steady us when confusion presses in. We do not have to invent courage; we fasten ourselves to what is true.

II
The breastplate · 6:14

Righteousness

“…and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,”

Righteousness guards the heart. We stand in the righteousness given through Christ, and we walk in the obedience that flows from it—not to earn his welcome, but because we have received it.

III
The shoes · 6:15

The Good News of peace

“…and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace,”

The gospel makes the feet ready. Reconciled to God through Jesus Christ, we carry peace rather than panic. We can move toward others with firm footing and good news.

IV
The shield · 6:16

Faith

“Above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.”

Faith meets the flaming accusation, fear, and lie with the trustworthiness of God. The shield is not confidence in our own grip; it is confidence in the One who holds us.

V
The helmet · 6:17

Salvation

“And take the helmet of salvation…”

Salvation guards the mind with settled hope. Christ has acted, Christ saves, and Christ will finish what he began. We face the day remembering whose we are and where our rescue rests.

VI
The sword · 6:17

The Spirit’s sword

“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;”

God’s word is not a slogan or a weapon against people. In the Spirit’s hand it exposes lies, names what is real, and gives us Christ’s own words to answer temptation with truth.

The watch · 6:18

Praying always

“With all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints.”

Prayer is not an accessory laid beside the armor. It is the watchful, persevering life of dependence that runs through it all. We remain awake to God, and we do not stand alone—we pray for all the saints.

The full passage

10Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.

11Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

13Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

15and having fitted your feet with the preparation of the Good News of peace,

16above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one.

17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

18with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints.
